I've been thinking about this lately. The term 'video game' doesn't seem appropriate to me. At first, I thought it was the 'game' part that bothered me. The word 'game' is synonymous with 'toy' which is synonymous with 'children', which leads to the stigma surrounding video games. Video games become associated with a children's play thing, which they shouldn't be. They should be known as something to be enjoyed by all people.

But then I remembered sports. Sports are games and are enjoyed by people of all ages. People even say, "Did you see the game last night?" So it can't be the 'game' part.

So that leaves the word 'video'. Yes, video games involve an electronic sequence of moving images but so do movies and television programs. But the word 'video' to me indicates that an actual event was captured on a recording device, which doesn't happen with video games. They are a work of fiction. They are a form of interactive entertainment. Maybe 'interactive entertainment' should somehow be in the title? Shortened in some way of course.

What do you think? Should video games be called something else? Or is the name perfectly fine the way it is?

I think that the term is just fine... even the "game" part. Video games aren't just associated with children anymore, thanks to games like Call of Duty, BioShock, Battlefield, and Assassin's Creed.
