Finished up Metal Gear Solid 4 the other night and I have...kind of mixed feelings about it. On one hand, the last couple acts were fantastic (besides some of the over-the-top cheesiness) and I was mostly happy with the way the story wrapped up. On the other hand, the first half or so of the game was ehhhhh both gameplay and story-wise. Overall I think MGS3 was my favorite of the saga, but I did really enjoy 4 as well.

Still not sure I'll get through Peace Walker and Ground Zeroes before September 1 though, so I may put off playing The Phantom Pain at release.

I wrapped up Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney today. First time ever playing through it after picking up a new copy last winter. In the "currently playing" thread I commented on how the game felt more accessible than the previous games, or at least not so tiresome.

Now, having finished the game, I'd like to refine that a bit. Because that last case (spoilers, but this came out in 2007, so whatever) - as cool as jumping back and forth between time periods was and finally being able to play as Phoenix again - that entire case was basically on autopilot. Everything was spelled out for you, there was nothing really to investigate, no really risk of losing the trial with mistakes, it was just an animated book at this point.

Also adding to that easy feeling throughout the game was the predictability of the cases? I mean, I've played the original three games before (the first one a couple times) and had recently replayed them in preparation for this game (and AA5) through the 3DS release - and every once and a while I'd still go "....seriously!?". But here, you know who the culprit is almost immediately upon meeting them. You know the end game in every case, you just have to get there.

I only really experienced the series trademark feeling of flying by the seat of your pants on the first case - the tutorial case.

But, all that negativity aside, I did really enjoy the game. The music, cast of characters, humour, etc. All of it. I really hope I'll encounter Trucy and Apollo again in AA5 once I start it because they're great. And it's a shame Apollo didn't get more direct sequels :(

(Not bothering to add to my game tracking post at the start of the thread because I've neglected to fill it in throughout the year *shrugs*)

Lots of puzzle games this month since I've been away and that's about all I can play when I'm gone.

    Club Nintendo Picross
Got this as a prize from the JP Club Nintendo. All the puzzles were Nintendo-related (characters or items from Nintendo IPs) and it pretty much used Picross e's gorgeous interface. It was a joy to play, albeit very short. But considering it was only like 200 points or something, I was incredibly happy with it.

    Mario Picross
This is that old GB game. I got it as a prize from the NA Club Nintendo and my god it was a chore. I've never played Picross on anything earlier than DS so I was not prepared for how laggy and unresponsive this would be. It was also annoying not being able to turn off hints outright and being stuck in the mode where if you make a mistake it docks time instead of just letting you figure it out once you've messed up your board. 8( There were a surprising amount of puzzles, though. Technically I didn't "complete" it because there are something like 50 additional puzzles in time trial mode once you clear everything else? But it gives you them randomly with no way to know how many you've finished so I put it down then and just marked it complete, eheh.

Tetris with Cardcaptor Sakura: Eternal Heart
I downloaded this from a ROM website ages ago because I was curious and then discovered it the other day. I finished it that day and it was a lot of fun, even though it's exactly what you'd expect. The multiplayer mode seems pretty robust, but I have no one to play it with right now so... maybe another time. :[ I did story mode on normal and easy though.

Finally finished up the main storyline of Splatoon. Wasn't too interested in the main story at first but wanted to see what all the fuss was about. It was challenging but pretty good! I enjoyed it.

Finished up the main storyline of MGS Peace Walker tonight. Just a meh game overall - terrible plot, terrible characters, mediocre gameplay. I'm not even going to do the hours and hours of grinding to get the true ending, I'm watching it on YouTube right now.

Aaaaaand Ground Zeroes is done. Did the main mission, Side Ops, and Extra Ops. Completion percentage is fairly low, I didn't get a lot of the collectibles and whatnot, and we won't talk about my rank on each mission.

But enough of that, time for MGSV!

    Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney
I haven't replayed this in so long that I'd forgotten most of it, which was great. It was probably as close to playing it blind again as I could have gotten. I loved it but at the same time I'm even more disappointed in AA5 for completely ignoring everything that happened in AA4, lol. (I'm due to replay that next though so... hopefully it'll be better a second time...???)

    To the Moon
I felt like replaying this on a whim last weekend so I did. It's such a beautiful story and the music is so good. ♥

aaaand... yeah. That's it this month. :( School started back up so all I managed to do were replays. No new games.

Wrapped up "Metroid Prime" with "New Play Control!" via the "Metroid Prime Trilogy" release on Wii U Virtual Console.

Wasn't as different to play as I had imagined, but the motion controls are still nice. As is the widescreen presentation.

Still one of the finest video games I have ever played

I played through the Halo 3: ODST campaign in the Master Chief Collection last week, but more importantly, I beat Batman: Arkham City on Tuesday. The open world added nothing to the experience (and, if anything, was detrimental) and I thought Asylum was the better game overall, but I still enjoyed it.
