    What's your favorite Pokemon generation?

Personally, gen 4 is my favorite. The Platinum Sinnoh Dex (not so much the D/P one) had the best Pokemon variety, Sinnoh was the best region, and quite a few of my favorite Pokemon were introduced in Gen 4. Top it all off with a really well-done remake of G/S, and Gen 4 is the best Pokemon generation, imo.

Gen 5 comes in second (I wasn't particularly fond of Unova, and the Dex really needs some work and more balance), and Gen 3 is a very distant third place. I don't really count 1 and 2 simply because they were remade (and a lot better) in later gens.

Gen 1 and 2 remakes are inferior to the originals just for the worse music. FRLG had those farty tinny horns that plagued RSE and for every kickass remix in HGSS, there was a horrid one (Goldenrod City, Dark Cave, Rival theme, etc.) I'm no elitist/hipster/etc that thinks chiptunes are inherently superior to actual music, I just feel that it could have been handled better.

Anyway, Gen 2 > Gen 1 > Gen 3 > Gen 5 > Gen 4. DPPt and BW both bored me to tears and I didn't even make it to the Elite 4 in BW before selling it, but I still prefer it to DPPt for having more memorable tracks, character design, the best new crop of Pokemon since GSC, and much-needed refinements like reusable TMs.

I know that Pokemon fans hate it when people say this, but by Gen 4 it felt like I was playing the same game over and over again, so while I still love the franchise as a whole the games no longer hold my interest. Once I found myself resorting to self-imposed challenges to squeeze even small amounts of enjoyment out of the games I knew it wasn't for me anymore. RSE is probably technically worse than DPPt or BW, but I wasn't as fatigued by the formula yet so I got a good 100 hours of play out of each version.

I'll tackle why my Gen 1/2 favoritism isn't just nostalgia as people with 4/5 favoritism tend to retort, but I'm really afraid of this rickety laptop dying and me losing all of this typing work, heh.

For me, it's tied between generations two (HG/SS included) and five. G/S/C brought in so many additions over R/G/B/Y that made the overall experience so much better, and I'll never forget the moment when I finally beat the Elite Four as a kid at around 2:00 AM, only to find out I still had roughly half of the game left to finish. I was giddy with excitement. However, even when I take off my nostalgia goggles when looking at generation two, I see my most beloved generation of Pokémon simply because of how fun it was.

However, generation five has done a darn good job so far of making me doubt whether or not generation two really is my favorite one. While I don't particularly approve of every Unova Pokémon (Ken Sugimori needs to be punished for the trash-based Pokémon), the region as a whole was well-designed, and the story of Black and White is hands-down the best story to ever grace a Pokémon game. Throw in some really great gameplay changes and additions, and you've got a compelling and fun game in your hands.

We can't be friends anymore. :c

Generation 1 is my favorite gen of the Pokemon. I got into generation 2 when they first came out when I was young and I didn't like it at all. That's actually what turned me away from Pokemon. I liked it until then and now they have a bunch of other generations? Like 600 Pokemon? Blasphemy! :P

Gen 1 introduced the best looking Pokemon...and that's about it. The game play has greatly improved since then in terms of the mechanics. While the formula is still relatively the same, the mechanics have been finely tuned with each generation. Gen 2 introduced the most significant additions imo (genders, day/night cycle, hold items, shinys, weather) and had the best music. Gen 3 is the worst. Worst looking Pokemon, worst region. The only good thing about was the introduction of abilities and FireRed/LeafGreen (I know natures are important but I don't really pay attention to them). Gen 4 has the best Pokemon in terms of stats and usage in competitive battling. And finally Gen 5 which I consider to be the best. Yes it has sub par looking Pokemon but it has the most thought out story, the Pokemon are animated, best utilization of online, seasons, and best graphics.

I haven't been a superfan of the series since Generation II, although I did love the FRLG remakes. I do still enjoy the series and play the main games, but I don't love them anymore. I feel like I'm playing the same game every time with negligible improvements.

I haven't particularly enjoyed the Pokemon designs of the recent generations. Generations I and II have the most "organic" vibe to the Pokemon designs and I enjoy that feel.

I do appreciate the minor additions that each instalment brings in terms of battling. I like the animated battles from BW. Multi-battles. Reclassification of moves (special, physical). Those kinds of things.

But the core overworld gameplay hasn't changed much since Generation II - except for the contests, which are just a stupid idea.

    Without a doubt, generation 1.
It was the first classic gen that everybody loved. That was back when Pokemon was extremely popular, and it's the generation that I absolutely loved. In my opinion every generation since then has gotten progressively worse. Nothing can top that classic first gen.

Looking back though, Kanto was a really boring region - the towns had very little personality and the characters weren't as developed. Plus the Pokemon designs were pretty bland back then, and have become a lot more intricate/exotic (to mixed results sometimes, true) in more recent gens.

Also, the game play was really basic in Gen 1. Very few moves, a lot less strategy involved, and Psychic types essentially had no weaknesses.

    And you can't run!!!

Yeah, if you look at it in a more technical aspect like the graphics etc., then yes the newer generations are better.
But I'm just talking more of how classic that first gen was, and how everyone loved Pokemon so much. It's almost like prefering an old Super Mario Bros NES game instead of a new game like Super Mario Galaxy. The NES game clearly had worse graphics, and story depth, but it was really fun and classic.
