If you're like me, you play a wide variety of games spanning a lot of genres, but sometimes there's just one or two genres or series that everyone else seems to love but make you go "Ugh, what's the big deal?" So what genres or series can you just not seem to get into?

I think The Elder Scrolls (and, to a lesser extent, WRPGs in general) would be mine. I've tried several times to get into Oblivion but just couldn't do it...it's way too open and there's absolutely no direction, and I'm the type of person that likes my games to have direction instead of just "Here's a big fantasy world, have at it!" I'm not too big of a fan of WRPGs in general for that reason, but I adore the Mass Effect series - probably because it has a bit more plot and direction than TES.

The other genre I can't stand at all is fighting games. No matter how hard I practice I still suck at them, and I just don't find them enjoyable at all.

Even if you didn't like Oblivion, I say you should try Skyrim. I personally didn't care much for Oblivion when I played it, but I LOVE Skyrim.

I agree on the fighting games. There are only a few fighting games I like: Super Smash Bros., Street Fighter, Soulcalibur, and Tekken. There may be a couple I forgot, but regardless, the list is small.

How do you feel about the Fallout games Geoff?

One genre I can't stand is sports games, if I wanna play football (soccer) then I'll call my mates and go kick a ball about for a bit.

    Halo.

I've played Halo 3: ODST and Halo: Reach and I just don't understand why this franchise is popular. There are a lot of better FPSs out there yet these games get so much attention and praise.

To be fair, ODST and Reach largely are different from the games in the original trilogy. Pick up Halo 1, 2, or 3 if you want a better feel for the series.

I used to feel that way about Halo, I loved the first one but I thought 2 and 3 weren't very good at all, but then I played ODST and it kind of rekindled my love for the series, then I got Reach which was such an amazing true return to form in regards to the multiplayer, it had a stellar story and a great cast. Yeah there are better FPS games than Halo (BF3, MW3) but there are also many many worse FPS games too (Black Ops, Killzones 1-3, Sniper, Rainbow Six Vegas etc)

2D fighters are a big one for me. I'm really bad at them so they've just never really clicked. I'm also just not a fan of platformers for... the same reason. But I enjoy them a lot more than fighters.

Gonna have to echo the people saying fighters. You pretty much had to be born in the early 80s and be brought up on older Capcom games to stand a chance in online play. There's so much elitism in the fighter community, too, with anyone not as experienced as hardcore players being branded a "scrub" and excluded by everyone else. It's a very insular genre that's not welcoming to newcomers and it sucks. This gen I've only been interested in Blazblue, mostly because the games are supposed to have long, contiguous stories that make for an enjoyable singleplayer mode.

I've never been a huge fan of fighting games, or really anything that has to do with superheroes, like Batman. (Edit: Also, I don't like most puzzle games, although I certainly like complex puzzles in games like Zelda.)

Oblivion is the worst of the 3D Elder Scrolls games. I'd personally say Morrowind is the best, but if oblivion was too free-roaming for you, you might want to stay away from it. Skyrim is definitely best for newcomers to the series. (Although the ending to oblivion will be spoiled to you if you talk to people... at all. They mention it in passing conversation all the time.)

But... those aren't even the main trilogy. You can't really judge the series as a whole without playing the main Halo games. Personally I think the first Halo game was the best story wise, but the third was the best gameplay wise. I couldn't stand ODST or Reach (Wars was fun though!)

Anyway, I can't get into the JRPG genre. Every time I start to play a JRPG (with the exception of Kingdom Hearts games) I get so bored and end up stopping after about an hour. I'm a big fan of WRPGs and MMORPGs, but I just don't like JRPGs at all.
