I've had this game sitting here for a couple years now and have never attempted to play it, but I think I'm going to. Considering it's hailed by many as one of the greatest games of all time, I kind of feel like less of a gamer by not playing it. Has anyone played/completed HL2 (or even the series in general!)? I love Portal, L4D, and TF2, so I'm sure the gameplay will be familiar since it's running on the same engine. So I might get started on this in the near future. And yes, I own it on 360 but I'm posting this in the PC forum since it was a PC game first and foremost and the PC gamers would kill me for daring to post a HL2 thread in the console forum. :P
The only game in the series I've played is Half-Life 2 (Unless Portal and Portal 2 count). My friend let me borrow his copy of The Orange Box for PS3 during the "Great PSN Outage of 2011." Had to give it back before I could finish it, though. I liked what I played, though I don't remember anything about it. xD;
I've only played HL1. But now that I've amassed HL2 and all its episodes on PC (I only owned HL2 but random acquaintances on Steam got extra copies of the episodes and gifted them to me because apparently I was the only one on their list who didn't have it XD), I'm gonna try to finish it up this summer. Hopefully. I wouldn't play the games on console, though. I was REALLY bad at HL1. Good game, but I was just embarrassingly bad at it. I actually ended up cheating and using the console a lot. I think I gave myself unlimited ammo with the pistol and it brought the game from a decent game to a great game for me so I don't feel too guilty about it, haha. If you want a PC version, Geoff, I have an extra copy of TOB on Steam. It'll play a lot better on PC, dev console or not. :P
Eh, if I don't play it on 360, it's going to taunt me sitting there with all that unclaimed gamerscore. Plus I already own TF2 and Portal two or three times each. But thanks anyway. XD
Sooo glad I let go of achievements ages ago. I can't stand playing FPS games on consoles so even with my 360 copy of TOB sitting there unfinished, it doesn't bother me at all. \o/
...I played one on PC? The only FPSes I've ever really played a lot of on console are Halo and L4D. Halo isn't really on PC and I've ALWAYS really disliked L4D on the 360 compared to PC. The only good thing about FPSes on consoles is being able to adjust how quickly you're moving which isn't that big a deal in the genre unless it incorporates stealth. Everything else is just horrid. :( When the whole point of the gameplay is to hit things accurately, trying to adjust your viewpoint/crosshair with a joystick is just a nightmare. You're also greatly limited in the number of weapons a game can let you carry/use at a time since aside from opening a menu, there's no good way to equip things with the limited buttons a controller gives you.
I started it last night and I'm really enjoying it so far! I'm on the Water Hazard chapter...and while I hate piloting the boat because the controls and physics are kind of wonky, it's had some really intense moments so far in this chapter. Soooooooo not looking forward to Ravenholm though.
Love the series. Been waiting patiently for Episode 3 since I finished Episode 2. All around great games. I have never beaten HL1, but I've gone through HL2 about a hundred times and a hundred more with various mods like candy cane guns and all this crazy stuff the modders put in it.
Well, I beat Ravenholm last night, and it wasn't nearly as bad as I expected it to be. The fast zombies made me jump a couple times, but mostly they were just annoying - knocking me off buildings and the like. I'm on Highway 17 now. I'd really like to get through the game by Saturday night since I'm out of town from Sunday and won't be back until Friday evening, but I doubt I can get through it all by then. I think I still have a fair chunk of game left.
