With the cancellation of Mega Man Legends 3, one of the most anticipated third-party efforts on 3DS, as well as the indefinite delay of Crush3D due to lack of 3DS adoption, do you think the 3DS is in a bit of trouble? Nintendo doesn't seem to really be giving the system the support they've given their other systems, with first-party releases fewer and more far between than even first-year Wii. Their strategy of holding back for third-parties to take center stage seems to be backfiring as well. All this, along with an extremely high price point, has caused 3DS to have lower-than-anticipated sales. I think Nintendo really needs a new strategy and some really solid titles to pull the 3DS out of this rut its been in since launch.
Well, we know the first-party titles are on the way and I don't think they'll be out any sooner than already expected, or that Nintendo has something up their sleeves that they can release all of the sudden in the interim. So, yeah, they need solid titles and they're coming... just not yet, unfortunately. I don't really get why Nintendo launched it as early as they did. It's like it was "leaked" (supposedly), and then they just ran with it ahead of their timeline. Also, it's not necessarily that the 3DS has an extremely high price point, I think it's more likely that the Vita is underpriced (I'm sure Sony would say it's "competitively priced"). Sony does have a history of doing that and then not really making money off of hardware for a few years. Different strategies.
I was gonna say I didn't think they were in trouble, since it's Nintendo and all, but... The 3DS launch is kind of reminding me of the PSP, except with more early-adopting fans. It's got poor launch titles, a very sparse launch calendar for the first long while, and a high price point. The only difference is Nintendo has a very strong first-party pool of titles to develop over the years whereas the PSP only got its strongest titles within in the last year or two. It's got some really big titles namedropped, even if they aren't really on the horizon yet, so I imagine it'll be fine in the long run. Especially if they do some sort of price drop or "lite" console eventually.
Not really. For a long time, all the DS didn't have too many great games, but look at how it turned out; the same goes for the PSP. the 3DS just needs some time on the market. However, I do believe that the Vita might do better than the 3DS. Not only is its hardware all-around better than the 3DS, but you can get it for the same price as a 3DS. The 3DS is gonna have some really tough competition this holiday season.
I think this holiday season the 3DS will probably do better...Nintendo has some solid releases coming out later this year, while Vita will just be releasing and will have to rely on its launch lineup. I think holiday 2012 will be a better indicator, and Vita's success during that time will be dependent on how good a game library it builds up within its first year.
Okay... so... we now have a price cut. A larger price cut than I thought it was going to be. A couple of retailers around here have it on sale for $199 this weekend. And I figured Nintendo would announce that as the new price soon. But, they went even further to $169. Wow, that's quite the drop from $249 and it's only a few months old. The 3DS "Ambassador" thing Nintendo has set up as compensation for early adopters is kinda interested. I love "free". "Free" is magical word. And 20 free games is great. But... I hope the NES game are part of the "3D Classics" series, because I don't really care that much about playing these old games once again unless they're somewhat different. I mean it'll be great to always have SMB or LoZ on the go with me, but I'm not looking forward to playing them necessarily. Same with the GBA titles. I'll pick up Metroid Fusion and WarioWare because I don't have those. But the other three they announced I have, and my DS Lite still works so I play them from time to time anyway. Hopefully the five games they haven't announced yet are something I don't already own Pro tip for people who haven't bought a 3DS yet. Go buy one from somewhere that offers a price guarantee, connect to the eShop to secure your placement as an Ambassador, then after the price drop comes into effect, go back to the store with your receipt and get it adjusted as you should be within their 30 day price window.
You know... I was honestly interested in the 3DS soley for MML3. T___T I don't give two shits about it now. :P
Yeah... yeah I think they'll be fine with this price drop. Though they'll also need some games to back it up. :s
A price drop isn't terribly helpful if it doesn't solve the underlying issues behind the current failure of the 3DS. I theorize that the masses by and large still don't realize that the 3DS is not merely another iteration of the DS but a new system entirely. Nintendo dug their grave by saturating and fatiguing the market with three DS upgrades in four years and buried themselves when they didn't advertise the "successor" aspect of the 3DS sufficiently. The battle is not one of price but of perception at this point, and how well Nintendo can educate a misinformed public will determine the fate of the 3DS.
It might not do as well as the DS but I don't think it'll be any more of a failure as a successor than, say, the GBC was to the GB.
