How many people are into this series? I've had an aversion to stealth games for pretty much my whole gaming life but I've finally forced myself to play MGS this year (despite having owned the first three games for probably 5-6 years now). And I have to admit, it's not too bad. I'm finding the characters and story more appealing than the gameplay, but I'm also not minding the stealth too much. Really like Otacon and got a few chuckles from some of his lines when Snake first met him. Mei Ling is annoying though, and holy stereotype. I'm thinking I might pick up the HD Collection when I'm ready to play 2 and 3, since I'm sure they don't hold up well on an HDTV. But we'll see.
I've played the entries in the main series up to 4. I really liked MGS2 and the rest were all kinda... I dunno. They were alright. I enjoyed playing them while I played them but I couldn't tell you any of the plot from 3 onwards. I have literally no idea what happened in 4. I haven't played anything past that, yet. I need to replay the first one. My roommate has the Gamecube remake but I won't have access to it after the end of the summer so maybe I should fast-track that. I also need to dust off my PSP and play Peace Walker since I've always heard such good things about that and I own it, but still haven't touched it.
I want to at least play one game in the series. Always wanted it to be the GCN remake just because I like the idea of Nintendo and Miyamoto being involved in it's development. But, more likely I'll probably be playing the NES version, or that GBC game before any of them because I'm going to be playing a lot of old games through emulation in the near-future. As for "true" games, the PSX Director's Cut while on that same emulation trip.
Since MGS5 is coming out this year, it looks like I have a lot of MGS marathoning to do. I'm probably going to start MGS2 in the next month or so (going to pick up the HD collection so my eyes don't bleed) and then I still have 3, PW, 4, and Ground Zeroes to play before 5 comes out. Hopefully I'm not sick of the series by then. @_@
I know this is an old topic and all but with all the commotion with Konami v Kojima and The Phantom Pain on it's way it seemed silly to start a new topic when one already existed. In regards to MGSV you don't really need to play MGS2 or MGS4. You can get away with just playing Snake Eater (I'd go for the 3DS version simply because the controls are better) and Peace Walker. From what's been said GZ will be in PP anyway. If not, GZ is free atm on the PSN store if you have PS+. I'm pretty excited about PP, I think it'll be the pinnacle of the series both in gameplay and scope. I've always preferred the Big Boss arc to the Solid Snake/Raiden arc and I think this one won't be an exception to that.
Eh, from all I've been told, even PW drops spoilers from MGS4 despite being a prequel. Plus I'd rather play the series leading up to TPP. I just finished 3 a week ago though and I'm taking a short break before moving on to 4 and Peace Walker. I wasn't a big fan of 3 at first, but it grew on me and I think it's my favorite of the three MGS games I've played so far. And that ending, holy crap.
The ending is so good. I found 3 cheesy at first but by the time I finished it it had become probably my favourite game of all time.
The ending got me more than any game I've played recently. I'm a sucker for good endings and I'm not ashamed to admit that I've gotten emotional over games before, but it's been a while since that's happened. And The Boss has become one of my favorite MGS characters, if not my favorite.
It's a shame Kojima scrapped his initial idea for MGS5 where you were to play as the Boss in the second world war.
Ugh, I would have killed for that. The sad thing is we'll never get the chance for that game to happen since we likely won't get another MGS game again after 5 - and if we do, it won't be Kojima behind it.
