A little timely given the largely negative response to the Metroid Prime spin-offs revealed at E3: "Federation Force" and "Blast Ball". But the producer of the Metroid Prime series (including Hunter, but not Pinball. And I assume these new 3DS games as well) has been sharing information about a potential fourth main title in the series. Given Sakamoto's distaste for the Prime sub-series, it almost reads like a sales pitch aimed at fans. I still feel like there's a little more work left for me to do in the Metroid Prime series. I can’t say when, but I want to make another one. ...Sylux is actually chasing after Samus (at the end of Prime 3), and that’s where that game ends. There’s still more I want to build around the story of Sylux and Samus. There’s something going on between them. I want to make a game that touches upon [it]. I’m also thinking that, in that eventual game between Sylux and Samus that might get made, that I want to involve the [Galactic] Federation as well. So it would be a good idea to release a game like Federation Forces to flesh out its role in the galaxy before moving on to that. --- If we started for Wii U now, it would likely take three years or so. So it would likely now be on Nintendo's NX console. It's a long time but it would need to include a lot of content, which would take a lot of work on the development side. ...I'm the producer of the Metroid Prime series, and [Metroid series co-creator] Yoshio Sakamoto is the one in charge of Metroid itself. I'm not sure when he's planning on making such an announcement so I can't speak for him. I'm not thinking about anything like that [partnering with another studio] right now. We have nothing to announce on working with any specific team. --- It is a great idea, I agree. Truth be told, making HD games takes a lot of time and resources. I haven't been able to collect a team or the resources to do it. --- “Instead of broadening it to more planets I would have one and would focus on the timeline, and being able to change that. That’s one interesting idea I have in mind… but I understand many people thought that [Echoes] was too difficult.” Thoughts?
I think the most interesting thing out of all that is that he's basically confirming NX is indeed the next console. Nintendo has been kind of dodging actually saying what NX is other than "a new gaming platform" but it sounds like, if he indeed knows what he's talking about, it's the Wii U successor. And I expect to see it released next year, given that this year's E3 pretty much confirmed that Nintendo has moved their development resources away from Wii U.
What a short lifespan that would be for the Wii U: 2012-2016. No other Nintendo console's lifespan was that short, except for the Virtual Boy of course.
Wii U sales never took off and there's no hope of them ever doing so. I think Nintendo realizes that it's best to cut their losses with the Wii U and go back to the drawing board. Last I checked, it hadn't even hit 10 million yet, and with no big titles on the horizon, I doubt it even hits half of Gamecube sales. It would really make no sense to make a Metroid or any other big game for Wii U when it has such a low install base. I'm still convinced that Zelda is getting Twilight Princess'd.
I think the NX will hit in 2017, not next year. If only because, I'm convinced of it being a hybrid or fusion or what-have-you and I can see the 3DS lasting just a little tiny bit longer
Nintendo already shot down the idea of it being a hybrid device though. Same platform on two different devices, is what I'm convinced we're getting. That said, Wii U has literally nothing for next year other than Zelda (3DS has a few games, at least, and likely will get Pokémon as well), and I think Nintendo is in a hurry to forget that the Wii U even exists. I wouldn't be surprised to see a Wii U successor as soon as late 2016 with Zelda getting the Twilight Princess treatment and releasing on both. I think handheld will come soon after.
Well, yeah. I view two devices, on the same platform, as a hybrid device - or at least something that can be used in such a way. Especially since those patents that surfaced recently show support for a controller with a screen, and I don't think Nintendo's going to want to include a Wii U -like tablet by default and inflate costs again Plus the lack of a disc drive, but support for SD cards. If two systems use the same SD card, you could buy a big enough one to hold two sets of assets or maybe the high res one gets downloadable since the patents stressed the HDD that's included. If they don't launch at the same time, I think the handheld will hit Japan first and the console North America first. And then the reverse within a quarter Also, let's take a moment to stand in awe of my titling for this thread. It still makes me chuckle
