Have you ever had any of your gaming systems fail or break? If so, did you fix it, replace it, or just deal with it if it wasn't a complete loss?
Xbox 360 - red rings. I think it was still under warranty so I sent it in and got a replacement pretty quick, but the replacement had this big scratch on it. In retrospect, I think that sort of killed my interest in the console because I don't recall playing it a lot after that. Playstation 3 - Slowly stopped working well out of warranty. I think because of some overheating problem? (Yellow light comes to mind but I'm too lazy to google that error.) I had access to my roommate's so I didn't do anything about it until he moved out and then I got a new one which is still going strong. I... think that's it? My DS Lite is dying (iirc the screen flickers sometimes), but I rarely have reason to use it anymore since I'd upgraded to a DSi before getting a 3DS, so I just use the latter when I need to play DS games. It's a shame, though, since I really loved my DS Lite.
My first GameCube. It was purple. It stopped reading discs shortly after the Wii was announced (as the Revolution), so I was hesitant to do anything with it with a new system on the horizon. Repair seemed costly. I think EB Games took it and I got the Platinum coloured one in exchange. Also, my Wii had been sent in for repairs before, it too stopped reading discs. It died on me at the very end of an annoyingly frustratingly boss battle I spent the whole day one <___< I returned my Zelda DS Lite for a new one shortly after opening it (like, within a week and a half?) because the hinge seemed really loose. I don't remember how I even managed to return/exchange that since at that point I no longer had the game that was bundled with it. I've had my SNES AC Adapter replaced before too. My original "brick" Game Boy has the outer casing of the screen broken off when it fell off of a table eons ago. Still works though That was a lot of Nintendo stuff despite their reputation, huh.
The only "failure" I've ever had was that my Wii doesn't read dual layer discs anymore. No big deal, since I had a Wii U at that point, so I just did the transfer. Still use it for Gamecube games if I ever need to play those, so it's not totally useless. I remember my PS2 having some issues with Rogue Galaxy too, which is dual layer, so it could have the same disc read issue as the Wii - but that's the last game I played on it and it's been two or three years.
I've only ever had an original Xbox give me the red ring of death. Other than that, my consoles have pretty much stayed in perfect shape. Heck, we got a replacement for that Xbox (this was a couple years before the 360 came out), and it's still working fine to this day. My oldest brother likes to revisit his old sports games, so he plays it a lot when he's home from college. Well, as far as I can tell since I moved out of my parents' house. Other than that, I had an old DS where the hinge broke, so the top screen just flopped around, but other than that, it worked perfectly. I traded it in for a discount on a 3DS two days later, so it didn't matter all that much. All in all, the consoles we still have (and operating) my family has is a PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, PS2, Gameboy Advanced, Xbox, Gameboy Color, and the original Gameboy. Well, the PS3 and Xbox 360 are mine that I have at my apartment, but still. Technology, despite hating me, tends to last a while. Does my second generation Ipod touch count? Because I've had that thing for six years now, and it's only recently shown signs of aging where it doesn't want to lock properly.
Forgot to mention my DSi...which I've played so much that the L and R buttons have worn out to the point where they sometimes don't respond. I don't really consider it a "failure" as much though, since the system works just fine other than randomly unresponsive shoulder buttons.
Reviving this thread since I've had a few issues over the past couple months! I had a scare with my PS3 as I was playing Uncharted 3 - it was having troubles streaming in textures/sounds and infinitely autosaving. It sounded a lot like the laser was going up, but it turned out that it was just the game disc. So crisis was averted there. However, I mentioned my PS2 having issues with discs earlier in the thread. I hooked it up a few weeks ago just out of curiosity and I think the laser is truly dead. I managed to get it to read a couple of games but it took a lot of encouragement...and even then it would randomly die in the middle of the game. So I'll probably need to pick up another PS2 at some point since there are still some games I need to play and I've had the urge to revisit that system lately.
