...instead of an actual Animal Crossing game on Wii U, straight from the horse's mouth: "We just wanted Animal Crossing Amiibo." This should be fun.
Quite the click-bait title there, Geoff I don't mind Amiibo Festival. I'm likely not going to play it, but I have nothing against it. Beside's Kyogoku-san's quaint statement, I'd imagine other key factors for why there isn't a Wii U Animal Crossing game coming would include: - As much as I prefer the GCN entry for it's simplicity, DS' Wild World and 3DS' New Leaf are the best in the series. The game shines and works better on a handheld. - At this point in the Wii U's lifespan, Nintendo is mainly on a good-will mission for fans. I think new content, even if Amiibo-centric, would be preferred than a pedestrian City Folk-like port of the 3DS title. - Until, Nintendo gets a Skylanders / Infinity type of Amiibo world game (likely not till the NX, I'd imagine), they do need some Amiibo software as a stop-gap. This would fit the bill
Why would they even admit this? It was fairly obvious the only reason they were releasing a game like this was because they knew they'd be able to sell the hell out of Animal Crossing amiibos. It's just weird that they'd even make a statement like this. tbh I don't really understand why they had to make another game at all if they weren't just going to make a real Animal Crossing game--they could have just made the Amiibo and had no "function" for them until the next AC game. There would be no shortage of people scrambling to buy the amiibo. But I can't complain. I'm not a huge fan of the Animal Crossing formula to begin with (I just can't get into it--I guess it's not my thing) but I have that interior design game preordered, so obviously I'm right in the demographic for "not quite Animal Crossing but close enough". XD;
I love Animal Crossing a lot and I can't tell you how disappointed I am in them that they would do this instead of a proper game. It's just an attempt to grab some extra money rather than work on a great new game which everyone could enjoy. It doesn't seem like we're getting an Animal Crossing Wii U anymore which makes me really sad, honestly.
To be fair, Justin is right: AC is made for handhelds. It's much easier to pick up and play New Leaf for five minutes on my 3DS than it would be to sit down in front of my TV, fire up my Wii U, load up the game, etc. just to check on my town. I also think that having another AC game so soon after New Leaf would be a bit redundant. So I'm not overly concerned with them skipping AC on Wii U. I'm just baffled as to why they'd be so transparent about it being a cash grab, and I'm not the biggest fan of Nintendo increasingly locking content behind Amiibo - no matter how much I like the actual figures themselves.
