Continuing on... I re-watched The Dark Knight earlier tonight. Love that movie immensely. I watched Batman: Gotham Knight for the first time earlier this week. An Animatrix-like project set between BB and TDK. A series of shorts. Bits were okay. But largely useless and forgettable
The Dark Knight Rises! I saw it earlier tonight. I loved it. But I think it is the most flawed of the three. I need another viewing to confirm though. It felt a little pedestrian and predictable (but still fantastic). I needed more Nolan psychobabble to entertain me. I don't know why so many people have said the plot is complex and confusing. Maybe if you haven't seen Batman Begins, but if you have then you shouldn't have a problem. It references it a lot. My biggest complaint is that this seemed a lot more... pedestrian. It felt more like a superhero movie while the previous movies felt like crime dramas that happen to have Batman in them. This was a disaster movie. It needed to be more noire. It needed more psychobabble. It should have treated its audience like the were educated with the past two movies (I loved the references to Batman Begins. But dropped in clips telling the audience "Hey! Remember this? This is what we're talking about right now" seemed really cheap and reminiscent of Spider-Man 3. Not a good thing) And the ending could have been improved ever-so-slightly and subtly. I hope the soundscape gets retweaked on the Blu-ray release. The score is very loud (and very bad) and makes it difficult to hear dialogue at times.
I agree with everything. Although it can be hard to follow at times, especially in the first half, just because there is a lot going on in terms of story and they need to introduce everything in the beginning (characters, basic plot) but there's no rest period. The viewer is just constantly being fed key information that it can get overwhelming. Longer pauses between scenes would have helped just so the viewer can reflect on what was just said. Now, how to do the future Batman installments (because we all know there is an inevitable Justice League of America movie coming due to The Avengers' popularity and success). It shouldn't try to be like these three films. They shouldn't be grounded in reality. They should still be serious and dark but based more on the comics. They should have the same tone but be truer to the source material. If they try to be like these films and try to top them they will fail.
TDKR was definitely nothing like the previous two movies. It was everything you said it was; more flawed, more like a superhero movie... but I enjoyed it so much more than I enjoyed the The Dark Knight (never saw Batman Begins, but I was caught up prior so I knew what was going on). Anne Hathaway as Catwoman was amazing; she truly stole the show. There were plotholes, far more than in the previous movies, but regardless it was that much more fun to watch. I've seen it three times in cinemas already, whereas I would have only ever seen The Dark Knight once. Another movie I've seen recently is Young Adult. IT WAS SO GOOD. Well, in truth the movie itself wasn't all that spectacular - it was well done, but it wasn't like the greatest masterpiece of all time. But the part that was so good to watch was the main character played by Charlize Theron. I see so much of myself in her, she's like my spirit sister. She is my Patronus.
I saw The Dark Knight Rises with my girlfriend. I really liked it. I thought it was a solid ending to the trilogy and I would see it again.
Saw Total Recall today with my dad. It was okay. Not as good as the original but an interesting take. Special effects were neat; could've used less lens flares though.
I found Total Recall utterly boring. I thought this was bound to be better than the original (despite never having seen it) because, you know, no Arnold Schwarzenegger. But I was really disappointed. I loved Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel, but the movie itself I found entirely uninteresting. I saw Bully the other day though. That is the third movie that has ever made me cry in my lifetime, and I was sobbing like a little bitch from beginning to end. Everybody needs to see that movie. Everybody on the planet. This is of utmost importance, its message is just so vital.
My university was showing The Hunger Games outside at the amphitheater Friday night, so I decided to stay and watch for a while. Just as good as I remember it being.
