I got around to seeing Jurassic World yesterday (or yesterday's yesterday as it is now after midnight).

It was entertaining for what it was. I think it had an idea or two too that were promising and could have been developed more fully in better hands. The beginning was slow and lacked any sense of magical wonderment from the first movie. There were some underdeveloped characters and subplots that went nowhere. But it was a fun time once everything started going wrong, as it does. It's just a kaiju chase movie basically.

The practical effects from the original outshine the digital dinos in this movie. There was at least one welcome scene that was clearly practical in this movie though. Also didn't help that I got stuck with a 3D showing and the image were not aligning properly. And the framing was odd with some text at the bottom of the screen being cut off :( So that detracted from overall enjoyment

Giacchino did a great job with the music. The new material was fitting and the borrowed material was nostalgic enough.

    Fun popcorn summer flick.

I agree that the sense of wonder was gone. But the film acknowledges this and it's one of its main themes: people aren't that impressed with seeing dinos anymore. Dinosaurs have been digitally and physically recreated in various mediums numerous times. So seeing an ordinary dino on the big screen doesn't make you go "Wow!" anymore. That was the point of the hybrid dino. And I think it worked.

I saw "Mr. Holmes" the other day. I enjoyed it. My only exposure to Sherlock Holmes previously was the absolutely fantastic recent BBC show; so with that limited view of the character in my mind it was fun to see little flickers in the character that reminded me of it. Although, I'm sure that's probably how the books are too.

The great detective aspect aside, the film is really just about a brilliant man, now aged and suffering alzheimer's. Which is sad, because he is so clever - but now has difficulty using that ability. There's no crime to be solved, but rather remembered. After being alone and isolated for so long, he begins to rediscover himself.

So, it's cliche and sappy but I still liked it.

...and given the subject matter, there was a whole lot of old people in the audience. I am hip and with it oh boy

Last movie I saw was "Spectre" after watching the first three Craig!Bond movies, playing both versions of GoldenEye, and reading all the Fleming (and related chronology) novels.

I enjoyed. RottenTomatoes doesn't reflect this, but it was much better than Skyfall and more inline with what I expect from Bond given all the other material I've consumed.

Does not hold a candle to the masterwork that is Casino Royale though.

A couple weeks ago, I started spreading the word in the office about the wonder of Star Wars fan edits. I distributed them to a bunch of people, and tonight I threw a viewing party in the office.

We watched A New Hope Revisited. It wasn't the great presentation - it is an office space, afterall. We used a bad projector against a white wall, and the sound situation was less than ideal.

But! Where it counted, it worked.

And that would be other people who know these movies as well as I do. Every couple minutes I'd get a glance from someone or a comment - oooooh they really changed that? - that looks really good! - that was amazing - oh I like this - this is so different - they gave Chewie a medal!!

So, I'm pretty pleased it went over well. It's kind of like watching the movie for the first time again

Oh boy, where to start? I've watched a lot of movies this week...

First off, "The X-Files: I Want to Believe". Watched this on Christmas Day during some free time I had in our NYC hotel room. Is a mostly stand-alone work. Not connected to the series' mytharc at all and any essential details (the events of the series finale, say) are stated. Nothing to do with aliens either. It's more of a simple thriller, with some supernatural aspects thrown in. It was interesting seeing the main characters struggle with their beliefs - Mulder with the supernatural, and Scully with her faith. It was also interesting seeing Mulder and Scully as an actual couple since for the majority of the series they were platonic partners until the last few seasons... which also happened to be Mulder absent due to contract disputes. So, it was nice to see that relationship playout and see how their dynamics change, or even see them reflect on having to give up their son.

The next day, I then attended an advanced screening of "Where to Invade Next" - Michael Moore's next film due out next year. He was even there in person afterward for a meet and greet and Q/A session. So that was neat

That aside, for the last two days I've been watching the first six Episodes of the Star Wars Saga. Due to the aforementioned NYC trip, I was unable to watch "The Force Awakens" at release. My plan now is to see it tomorrow, so I spent some time to catch up and revisit the old movies. All of them were fan edits to varying degrees. IV was an improved and "revisited" Special Edition; V was the 1997 cut of the Special Edition; VI was a hybrid of the various releases it has seen over the years with colour correction; and the prequels were all recut (with some deleted scenes restored) to remove extraneous and superfluous bits and try to stick to the tone of IV and V.

And yes, this is basically two posts in a row where I mention watching A New Hope. In the same month even. Don't judge me.

I saw Titanic for the first time in seven years, and it was my first time seeing all of it, and holy crap I loved it.

It overtakes Slumdog Millionaire as my third favorite movie, and from a critic's perspective, it's the best move I've ever seen. It's still number three since District 9 and How to Train Your Dragon may not be better movies, but I enjoyed watching them more. Still, all of the cinematography, set design, and everything holds up very well, and I must admit I cried a bit at the end.

I watched District 9 this week since NolafusNolafus made me.

It wasn't bad, but I was kind of surprised at how bleak it was. Definitely not a feel-good movie, and if you want anything good at all to happen to any of the characters, you're not going to be happy.

I remember wanting to see that movie back when it was released. But I think some talk along those lines steered me away from it

(really? No post from you about Batman Begins? Shame)
